Ruwatan is the Javanese term that comes from the word ruwat, meaning “to cleanse or release from curse or misfortune.” This sacred ceremony serves as a powerful spiritual intervention designed to liberate individuals from various forms of bad lucj, spiritual contamination, and supernatural threats that may plague their lives.

Ruwatan is a self-cleansing method in Javanse society for those considered sukerta (spiritually unclean person). The ritual operates on the fundamental Javanese belief that spiritual imbalances can manifest as physical ailments, social problemsm and persistent misfortune. Through carefully orchestrated ceremonies, ruwatan aims to restore harmony between individual, their community, and the cosmic order.

The practice represents more than simple superstition; it embodies a sophisticated understanding of psychological healing, community support, and spiritual intervention. In Javanese cosmology, human beings exist within a complex network of spiritual forces, and ruwatan provides a structured method for navigating these invisible influences.

Wayang Kulit and the Sacred Story of Murwakala

The heart of the ruwatan ceremony is the performance of wayang kulit (shadow puppet theater) presenting the sacred story of Murwakala. In Ruwatan, wayang or Javanese puppet play is the most important ritual since the dalang ruwatan will play Murwakala story, which is believed to be the spell to cleanse the Sukerta.

The story centers on Bathara Kala, a fearsome deity born from the spilled essence of Bathara Guru (Shiva). Kala possesses an insatiable hunger for devouring sukerta children. The narrative follows the efforts of divine beings to negotiate with Kala, ultimately convincing him to spare those who undergo proper ritual purification.

The Sacred Role of Agarwood in Javanese Spirituality

Agarwood, known locally as gaharu, occupies a position of supreme importance in Javanese spiritual practices, particularly in ruwatan ceremonies. In Javanese belief systems, agarwood possesses unique spiritual properties that make it indispensable for high-level ritual work:

1. Devotional Offerings (Puja) with Agarwood Incense

In the week leading up to Vesak, Buddhist devotees engage in puja ceremonies at temples, offering flowers, candles, and incense as acts of reverence to the Buddha. Agarwood incense is offered at temple altars to symbolize purification and devotion. The fragrant smoke is believed to carry prayers and intentions toward higher realms. Agarwood is preferred for its deep, grounding aroma that fosters a sacred and peaceful atmosphere, ideal for prayer and contemplation.

2. Meditation Supported by Agarwood Aroma

Group and individual meditation session intensify in the days before Vesak, particularly in the evenings. Agarwood incense is commonly burned during these sessions. The calming scent of agarwood aids in relaxing the breath and focusing the mind, enhancing deep meditative states (samadhi). In Mahayana and Vajrayana Buddhist practices, agarwood is valued for aligning spiritual energies and supporting inner awareness.

3. Sacred Space Purification with Agarwood Smoke

Temples often perform ritual fumigations of shrines and sacred objects using agarwood incense prior to Vesak. The aromatic smoke is used to cleanse spiritual energy, similar to smudging in other traditions. It prepared the space for sacred events, signifying that the location is spiritually ready to receive blessings and hold ceremonial acts.

4. Personal Altar Offering and Home Devotion

Individual burn agarwood incense daily as part of pre-Vesak spiritual dicipline, often combined with chanting and reflection. Some devotees form incense garlands or bundles as symbolic acts of sincerity and inner purification.

The use of agarwood incense during the Vesak period is deeply symbolic and spiritually potent. Its presence in rituals, meditations, and offerings represents purity, mindfulness and connection to the sacred. For Buddhist, agarwood is more than fragrance, it’s a medium through which inner peace and devotion are cultivated in preparation for the holiest day of the year.

The genera Aetoxylon and Gonystylus can also produce lower quality agarwood. This type of agarwood has a pungent aroma when burned, so there is a significant price difference when compared to true agarwood. This type of agarwood is called crocodile agarwood (buaya agarwood). Because crocodile agarwood can produce lower quality agarwood oil, this crocodile agarwood still has quite good commercial value.

The high price of agarwood today has resulted in several manufactures selling crocodile agarwood and labeling it as true agarwood. The similarity between crocodile agarwood and true agarwood makes agarwood collectors often mistake crocodile agarwood for true agarwood, resulting in losses for collectors.The appearance of some crocodile agarwood is very similar to true agarwood, it is impossible to distinguish the authenticity of agarwood from agarwood photos alone. In addition, some irresponsible traders paint unformed agarwood with dark brown oil paint that is similar to agarwood to make it look like true agarwood. If we do not evaluate it and only judge it from the photo or appearance, we will be easily fooled.

However, for some people, especially in China, most crocodile agarwood has an unpleasant aroma when burned, so it cannot be used to make incense. Three species of Aetoxylon are widely distributed to Sarawak and Kalimantan. The production of crocodile agarwood from Aetoxylon is much more than true agarwood on the market. Based on Anderson’s survey in 1995 (which is long time ago), crocodile agarwood was exported a lot to India, but mostly to Singapore and Indonesia.
