In the rich tapestry of Javanese culture, few traditions are as profoumd and spiritually significant as ruwatan. This ancient ceremony represents one of Indonesia’s most sophisticated spiritual practices, combining theatrical artistry, mystical beliefs, and community solidarity to address fundamental human needs for purification and spiritual balance.

Understanding Ruwatan: The Essence of Spiritual Cleansing

Ruwatan is the Javanese term that comes from the word ruwat, meaning “to cleanse or release from curse or misfortune.” This sacred ceremony serves as a powerful spiritual intervention designed to liberate individuals from various forms of bad lucj, spiritual contamination, and supernatural threats that may plague their lives.

Ruwatan is a self-cleansing method in Javanse society for those considered sukerta (spiritually unclean person). The ritual operates on the fundamental Javanese belief that spiritual imbalances can manifest as physical ailments, social problemsm and persistent misfortune. Through carefully orchestrated ceremonies, ruwatan aims to restore harmony between individual, their community, and the cosmic order.

The practice represents more than simple superstition; it embodies a sophisticated understanding of psychological healing, community support, and spiritual intervention. In Javanese cosmology, human beings exist within a complex network of spiritual forces, and ruwatan provides a structured method for navigating these invisible influences.

Wayang Kulit and the Sacred Story of Murwakala

The heart of the ruwatan ceremony is the performance of wayang kulit (shadow puppet theater) presenting the sacred story of Murwakala. In Ruwatan, wayang or Javanese puppet play is the most important ritual since the dalang ruwatan will play Murwakala story, which is believed to be the spell to cleanse the Sukerta.

The story centers on Bathara Kala, a fearsome deity born from the spilled essence of Bathara Guru (Shiva). Kala possesses an insatiable hunger for devouring sukerta children. The narrative follows the efforts of divine beings to negotiate with Kala, ultimately convincing him to spare those who undergo proper ritual purification.

The Sacred Role of Agarwood in Javanese Spirituality

Agarwood, known locally as gaharu, occupies a position of supreme importance in Javanese spiritual practices, particularly in ruwatan ceremonies. In Javanese belief systems, agarwood possesses unique spiritual properties that make it indispensable for high-level ritual work:

Divine Communication : The fragrance is believed to open channels between the earthly and divine realms.

Protective Barrier : The smoke creates a spiritual shield against malevolent entities

Purification Power : The aroma cleanses both physical spaces and spiritual atmospheres.

Meditation Enhancement : The complex scent promotes deep meditative states in practitioners

The dalang ruwat (the puppet master who conducts ruwatan ceremonies) must be knowledgeable about agarwood quality and selection, as using inappropriate grades can diminish the ceremony’s effectiveness. Master practitioners often maintain relationships with trusted agarwood suppliers who understand the spiritual requirements of ceremonial use.

The use of agarwood in ruwatan ceremonies reflects the deep commitment of Javanese families to spiritual wellbeing. High-quality agarwood can cost hundreds or even thousands of dollars per kilogram, making it one of the most expensive natural materials used in traditional ceremonies. This economic sacrifice demonstrates the profound faith placed in the ritual’s power and the value placed on spiritual purification.

Through continued practice, documentation, and respectful study, ruwatan can continue tos erve as a source of healing, wisdom, and cultural identity for Javanese communites while offering valuable insights to the broader human family seeking authentic approaches to spiritial development and community building.

The seven genera in the Thymelaeceae family, including Aquilaria spp., Gyrinops spp., Aetoxylon, Gonystylus, Phaleria, Enkleia, and Wikstroemia, can produce agarwood, but only Aquilaria spp., and Gyrinops spp., are internationally recognized as true agarwood.

The genera Aetoxylon and Gonystylus can also produce lower quality agarwood. This type of agarwood has a pungent aroma when burned, so there is a significant price difference when compared to true agarwood. This type of agarwood is called crocodile agarwood (buaya agarwood). Because crocodile agarwood can produce lower quality agarwood oil, this crocodile agarwood still has quite good commercial value.

Crocodile Agarwood or Gaharu Buaya (Source: https://www.ebay.com/itm/1-5-Kg-Uncleaned-Agarwood-Wild-Harvest-Indonesian-Gaharu-Buaya-Aloeswood-3-3-Lb/281567970184)

The high price of agarwood today has resulted in several manufactures selling crocodile agarwood and labeling it as true agarwood. The similarity between crocodile agarwood and true agarwood makes agarwood collectors often mistake crocodile agarwood for true agarwood, resulting in losses for collectors. The appearance of some crocodile agarwood is very similar to true agarwood, it is impossible to distinguish the authenticity of agarwood from agarwood photos alone. In addition, some irresponsible traders paint unformed agarwood with dark brown oil paint that is similar to agarwood to make it look like true agarwood. If we do not evaluate it and only judge it from the photo or appearance, we will be easily fooled.

However, for some people, especially in China, most crocodile agarwood has an unpleasant aroma when burned, so it cannot be used to make incense. Three species of Aetoxylon are widely distributed to Sarawak and Kalimantan. The production of crocodile agarwood from Aetoxylon is much more than true agarwood on the market. Based on Anderson’s survey in 1995 (which is long time ago), crocodile agarwood was exported a lot to India, but mostly to Singapore and Indonesia.

Agarwood is identified internationally based on botanical classification method. Agarwood produced by tree species with different properties has different values in the market. According to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), only tree species of seven genera in the Thymelaeceae family, including Aquilaria spp., Gyrinops spp., Aetoxylon, Gonystylus, Phaleria, Enkleia, and Wikstroemia, can produce agarwood. The international standard states that the tree species that can produce agarwood must be Thymelaeceae.

According to the CITES, agarwood is mainly divided into three categories, they are true agarwood, crocodile agarwood, and fake agarwood. In this article, we will begin by exploring true agarwood. Let’s dive straight into the discussion!

Before 2004, it was recognized that the sources of true agarwood were 25 species of Aquilaria spp. and 7 species of Gyrinops spp. in the Thymelaeceae family. A total 32 species were listed in Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) for controlled trade in 2004. The wild agarwood produced bt these 32 species is the true agarwood recognized in international trade. Among them, Aquilaria malaccensis, which is the species that D’OPENER uses to make agarwood incense, was listed in Appendix II for control in 1995.

With the application of scientific and technological investigations, Aquilaria audate was added to the genus Aquilaria of Thymelaeceae family and Gyrinops walla was added to the Gyrinops to the Appendix II of the CITES in 2016. Therefore, the source of agarwood has become 26 species of the genus Aquilaria and 8 species of the genus Gyrinops of the Thymelaeceae family.

Aquilaria spp. species are distributed throughout South Asia and Southeast Asia. Aquilaria malaccensis is the most widely distributed and is found in Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Different from Aquilaria spp. species, Gyrinops spp. are mainly distributed in the eastern Indonesian archipelago and New Guinea.

From the distribution map of Aquilaria and Gyrinops, we can find that if Sulawesi Island in Indonesia is taken as the center line, the farther west the agarwood is, the better, and the farther away from the equator, the better. Of course, there are exceptions, agarwood from Brunei, North Vietnam, and Laos do not meet this standard. Take Brunei as an example, Brunei is located on the equator, but the agarwood production is the best in Borneo.

In this summary, true agarwood stands as a precious natural resource that varies significantly depending on its botanical origins and geographic distribution. As we’ve explored, the distinction between Aquilaria and Gyrinops species plays a crucial role in determining the quality and value of agarwood in the international market. The ongoing recognition and conservation efforts by CITES ensure the sustainable trade of these species, which is essential for protecting the delicate ecosystems where they thrive. Whether you are a collector, a user of agarwood prouducts, or simply interested in its rich history, understanding the origins and classifications of true agarwood enhances our appreciation of this remarkable material. As the journey of agarwood continues, it invites us all to respect and value the natural world it represents.
